Fish species noted in Loon Lake by the 2011 DNR Survey (linked below) include walleye, bluegill, northern pike, smallmouth bass, largemouth bass, pumpkinseed sunfish, rock bass, yellow perch, brown and yellow bullheads, and white suckers. Anglers have reported catching crappie as well. No ciscoes or rainbow trout were captured in the most recent survey although they were once present in the lake. Bluntnose minnow, banded killifish, golden shiner, logperch and Johnny darter represent the non-game forage base.
The Michigan DNR has informed the Loon Lake Conservancy that a similar study is scheduled for 2025 on Loon Lake.
Based on the opinions of numerous anglers, the prevalence of Largemouth/Smallmouth Bass, Bluegill, Sunfish, Perch, Northern Pike, Walleye, and their aquatic vegetation habitat is degraded in its current state when compared to the 2011 survey.
The Loon Lake Conservancy is also encouraging discussion among Stakeholders as to their opinions on ongoing management/stocking efforts on Loon Lake. Anglers vary in their opinions on whether walleye stocking in the lake should continue or if management for Bass, Pike, and Panfish species should take precedent. If you are an angler on Loon Lake….. we would like to hear from you!
